Post 2/17

You have two poetry-related posts for this week.  You should spend about 15 focused minutes on the actual writing of each (as always).  If you spend time preparing to write these posts (for instance, annotating song lyrics), you can count it toward your 120 minutes.  Also, remember you need a book to read.  If you've been reading something random from my shelf in class, you are going to need a book to get to 120 minutes.  Go to the library or do what you need to do.

In this phrase, in "Umbrella" by Rihanna feat. Jay-Z, "Let it rain, I hydroplane in the bank
Coming down with the Dow Jones
When the clouds come we gone, we Rocafella
We fly higher than weather
In anticipation, for precipitation," is an example of assonance.

In this part of the song, "You have my heart
And we'll never be worlds apart
Maybe in magazines
But you'll still be my star
Baby 'cause in the dark
You can't see shiny cars
And that's when you need me there
With you I'll always share," euphony, cacophony, and assonance are displayed. In this song umbrella is a symbol of shelter and protection. The purpose of this song is to tell a spouse or loved one that when bad things happen Rihanna will always be there for that special person. In addition, she is trying to convey that everything will be ok because she will be there for that person, but when good things happen they can have fun together and embrace the good times. The word: "umbrella" in this song is an example of an anaphora.

The tone in this song is disapproval of this person's actions but she also assures this person that she will always be there for them no matter what mistakes they make. Rihanna's diction sounds like she is trying to be informative and convince this person of her feelings for them. The speaker is a girlfriend or a wife. The purpose of this song is for a spouse or loved one.

Post 2: Write a Poem

Write a poem!  In no less than 15 lines, use a minimum of 3 of the techniques we've been discussing, and identify the techniques at the end.

Your poem can be about anything, but if you need ideas:
- describe an object or place that means something to you with dense imagery
- narrate a memory from childhood (you can use the free-writing we did in class)
- use figurative language to describe an emotion
- a letter to someone or something
- a list

Post your reading details - be specific.

Dear Dad,
I am coming home soon.
I love my counselor Waldo.
We went with Waldo while we were watching for wolves.
Dudes were frightened gazing through the forest.
Sally said she was scared seven times.
At night, I sleep well and fall asleep easily.
In the morning, I wake abruptly when the bell rings loudly over the speaker
next to our cabin. I dress with no stress.
I feel very blessed. Summer is coming to an end,
hopefully I will return to camp again.
I assume home is calm and peaceful.
Is the weatherman still deceitful?
It is warm here and sunny everyday,
wondering if you are having a great day.
Love forever and always,
Hayes

I used sibilance, euphony, cacophony, consonance, assonance, and enjambment.

Blog Post: Sunday Feb 2

Post 1: Sneaux Week Free post!
My snow week was a nice break. I went to my friend's house on Monday and spent the night. We had pizza for dinner and made churros for desert with a chocolate dipping sauce. We had to make them for our snow day assignment. They were really good. For breakfast, Claudia made cinnamon roll waffles with icing on top.

The next couple of days off were relaxing. I slept late and watched a lot of movies. I saw Frozen for the first time. It was so good. I had low expectations and I ended up really liking it. The bet part was, when we walked out of the movie theatre and it was snowing! I was so surprised! I have never seen it snow here.

Post 2: Your research paper draft: what do you feel confident about in this draft?  What are you concerned or unsure about?  What was easy and what was hard?  What would you like help changing?  What should I focus my feedback on when I read? (Write a two-paragraph post that responds to these questions but that works independently as a piece of writing, not just a list of answers).

I am really confident in my rough draft. I feel like it is well-written and organized. I feel like my thesis statement is strong, concise, and to the point. The toughest part about writing the paper was citing all of the sources. Luckily, I went back and checked to make sure I had done it right. It was easy to write it once my notecards were finished. That did not take me very long.

It was a lot easier to write this paper than I expected. I was concerned that I would be struggling to reach the 4-6 page requirement. But because I had taken the notecards seriously and filled them with a lot of useful information, it was not as hard as I imagined. My weakest link in my paper is probably my conclusion. I would like help changing my conclusion and making sure my quotations are well-introduced.
